We, all are Zone 9

1 May

The arrest of six bloggers and three journalists by Ethiopia’s government in 2014 April ending, has led to widespread outcry even among those generally supportive of the ruling party’s policies.
Friends and readers portray the Zone 9 bloggers as young and principled activists pressuring Ethiopia’s government to respect the country’s 1995 constitution.
Possible assumption to the arrest:
1. Working with foreign advocacy groups who tried to create “unrest” using social media. The UK-registered organization, Article 19 recently attempted to offer Ethiopian journalists and bloggers training in online journalism security.
2. Some analysts have suggested that the crackdown on journalists is happening because the government is worried about the potential for unrest due to rising prices.
3. Elections without Meles are due next year.

Ban sought on Addis Ababa gay conference

30 Nov

Addis Ababa: The fate of an upcoming gay conference here hangs in balance with religious leaders seeking a ban on it.

Religious leaders and government authorities in Ethiopia held a meeting Tuesday over whether or not to ban the gay conference in which about 200 activists as well as UN and US officials are expected to participate. The conference is being held at Addis Ababa`s Jupiter International Hotel Dec 3 to discuss men having sex with men (MSM) issues.

Organised by African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (Amsher), the meeting seeks to increase attention on MSM and HIV related issues in Africa, to reflect on the state of the response in MSM communities in Africa and to identify ways to scale up MSM and HIV interventions, according to News from Africa website.

The speakers at the conference will discuss health and human rights issues, including criminalisation of same-sex practices, facing the gay community.

Ethiopia`s criminal law strictly prohibits homosexuality.

The controversy erupted ahead of the Dec 4-8 16th International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs) in Africa (ICASA).

Ethiopia`s Health Minister Tewodros Adhanom Tuesday held an hour long meeting with religious leaders from the Ethiopian Muslim Council as well as the Ethiopian Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical churches.

Ther religious leaders had also called a press conference to oppose the gay conference.

“The minister came to convince the religious leaders to call off the press conference as the government believes it would affect the ICASA turnout,” a source said.

“In return, the minister may offer to quietly cancel the gay conference.”

At the end of the meeting, neither the minister nor religious leaders spoke about what they agreed on.

Religious leaders later told journalists that “the press conference has been postponed to undetermined date”.

Homosexuality is illegal in about 80 countries throughout the world and nine countries prescribe death as a punishment.

Askalukan Trading managing director extradited to Ethiopia

1 Aug

Askalukan Trading Plc Managing Director, Girmay Gebremichael, who was accused of collecting over 45 million birr from citizens saying that he would take them to South Africa to attend the 20th World Cup, and disappeared from the country is extradited to Ethiopia.

The suspect was handed over to Ethiopia Friday from Germany in an effort the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Police of Ethiopia made in cooperation with the Government of Germany, where he was hiding.

Interpol Ethiopian Division Head, Commander Yemane Gessesew said the arrest of the suspect depicts that any one that involves in criminal acts cannot escape to be accountable to the law.

More than 1,200 citizens were cheated their money and faced difficulties by what happened at the season of the 20th FIFA World Cup.

25,000 housemaids from Ethiopia has been delayed.

16 Jul

JEDDAH – The arrival of about 25,000 housemaids from Ethiopia has been delayed because of a shortage of flights from Addis Ababa, a senior official said here Friday.

Ali Al-Qureshi, member of the National Recruitment Committee and a member of the Recruitment Committee at Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), has urged the airlines operating between the Kingdom and Ethiopia to increase their flights to lift the maids now stranded in Addis Ababa.

Saudi families are desperately seeking housemaids from other countries after their recruitment was banned from Indonesia and the Philippines earlier this month. With Ramadan fast approaching, the need for the housemaids is ever-growing with black marketeers making huge profits.

Al-Qureshi said the National Recruitment Committee has managed to employ a large number of Ethiopian domestic workers as part of the committee’s plan to open new channels for housemaids to break the Indonesian monopoly.

He said there are seven flights a week which are only enough to lift 1,000 maids a week. The recruitment procedure, he said, are normally completed in a fortnight, but the main problem is to make travel arrangements for the domestic workers.

Easy recruitment procedures in Ethiopia and the assurances given by the Ethiopian government for a smooth flow of domestic workers to the Kingdom have been encouraging factors for several recruitment offices in the Kingdom to look toward the African nation, he said.

Recruitment offices in the Kingdom see Ethiopian workers as good alternatives to Indonesians, some of whom have become a source of great nuisance to Saudi recruiters because they flee their employers and cause other problems, he added.

Yahya Aal-Maqbool, head of the Recruitment Committee at Jeddah Chamber, said Ethiopian domestic workers are good substitute for the Indonesian and Filipina workers, pointing out that Ethiopian maids have worked in the Kingdom for a long time, but they were employed by a specific class of the society.

In view of the unacceptable conditions set by the Indonesian and Philippines for recruitment of domestic workers from the two countries, the Saudi Ministry of Labor banned recruitment from those countries, which led the National Recruitment Committee to open new channels in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

Made in Ethiopia: The story of Holland Car

14 Jun

When Tadesse Tessema’s company first started to sell its locally assembled cars in Ethiopia, one of the biggest challenges was to convince the public that its vehicles were of the same quality as the brands imported from the west.
“Our main achievement is that we have been able to change the minds of the people,” says Tessema, general manager of Ethiopia’s first indigenous vehicle assembly company Holland Car.
Born in Ethiopia, Tessema lived in the Netherlands for many years. During his occasional visits to Ethiopia he discovered a big demand for cars. So he created a company which exported used vehicles from the Netherlands to Ethiopia. After a while he, however, spotted an opportunity for local assembly. “I thought, why don’t I go back and assemble new cars in my country.”
To access funds for the new business, Tessema went into a joint venture with a Dutch firm, Trento BV Engineering. This allowed Holland Car to obtain additional funding from the Dutch government. After launching operations in 2005, the company in 2006 celebrated its first assembled car during a ceremony at the Hilton hotel in Addis Ababa.
All car parts are imported from China and assembled at a facility outside the capital. The Daily Monitor newspaper earlier reported that Holland Car used to import parts from Chinese auto manufacturer Lifan Motors. This partnership was later ended and the company currently works with JAC Motors.
At first the assembly plant was only able to turn out one car per day, but following additional investments and facility improvements, the company currently has the capacity to produce up to six units. Tessema wants to increase this to ten cars per day. He also has plans to go from assembling cars to manufacturing the parts as well.
All Holland Car’s models are named after rivers in Ethiopia, with names such as Abay, Tekeze and Shebelle. Tessema says this is to emphasize the cars’ local credentials and to foster a sense of national pride.
Plans are also underway to roll-out a biogas powered car. The goal is to not only assemble the vehicle, but to also produce the gas itself. Holland Car is, however, seeking further government assistance before going into full-scale production. “From the distance we have travelled so far, we have come to the conclusion that there is nothing to hinder us from manufacturing biogas cars here in Ethiopia,” reads a statement on Holland Car’s website. In addition, the company is also marketing a mass transportation bus designed and manufactured in Ethiopa, for both the local market as well as the rest of the continent.
With a population of around 80 million and double-digit GDP growth rates in recent years, many are viewing Ethiopia as the next big investment opportunity in Africa. Last month, Ethiopia’s newfound importance as a business destination was confirmed when it was announced that the 2012 World Economic Forum on Africa will be held in Addis Ababa.
Tessema says that companies like Holland Car are changing perceptions of Ethiopia. He said that “the sky is the limit” for investors looking to do business in the country and that “now is the time” to invest.
Africans themselves need to grab hold of the opportunities on the continent. “Investors from Asia are coming to invest money here, while we Africans still sit down and wait,” Tessema notes.
He believes that the African diaspora can play a significant part in the continent’s transformation. “If 10% of these people can come back to Africa, most of the problems in Africa would be solved. Governments have to give the opportunities . . . and incentives to bring these people back . . .”

Ingela Jansson, one of the Sweden’s most notorious fraudsters, was arrested in Ethiopia in January 2010, having absconded from Sweden in 2007.

In mid-May, an Ethiopian court handed Jansson a 25-year prison sentence, convicting her of 20 counts of fraud and human trafficking.

A 35-year-old Swedish accomplice was also convicted and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

“Both have appealed some of the points on which they were convicted. The embassy is there following the case and visiting the Swedes in prison,” foreign ministry spokesperson Karin Nylund told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The 30-year-old from western Sweden is well known in police circles in Sweden.

Her criminal activities first came to light in 2003 when she was charged with fraud after leasing cars in her boyfriend’s name, then selling them on the black market.

In a bid to receive a reduced sentence during her trial in Sweden, Jansson testified against the so-called Naser league, and was provided with police protection and a new identity.

However further criminal activities came to light in the ensuing years and she was eventually arrested once again in 2006. This time she was accused of fraud amounting to millions of kronor related to several incidents of deception involving cars, hotels and cash.

The case came to court in 2007 but the day before sentencing, Jansson absconded and was sentenced to two and a half years in jail in her absence.

She was re-arrested in Ethiopia last year and her trial started last summer.

Swedish prosecutors are still working to have Jansson extradited to Sweden, but according to prosecutor Jakob Holmberg told Aftonbaldet that Ethiopian authorities are waiting to process the request until after legal proceedings in Ethiopia are completed.

IMF says Ethiopia economy to slow in 2011/12

1 Jun

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopia‘s economic growth will slow to about 6 percent in the 2011/12 fiscal year due to high inflation, restrictions on private bank lending and a trickier business environment, the International Monetary Fund said.

“The principal macroeconomic challenge is surging inflation. While this partly reflects rising international commodity prices, excessive monetary growth has been the principal cause,” the IMF said in a statement late on Tuesday.

The Washington-based body projects growth of 7.5 percent this fiscal year, below official estimates of 11.4 percent.

Ethiopia’s year-on-year inflation rate surged for a second straight month to 29.5 percent in April, from 25.0 percent a month earlier.

IMF said Ethiopia’s budget saw a domestic financial surplus in the first half of 2010/11, but there was a significant recourse to central bank financing as the Treasury bill market collapsed, reflecting high negative interest rates.

The Horn of Africa country needed to provide room for the private sector to flourish and maintain a low risk of debt distress, IMF said.

“Going forward, the authorities are encouraged to reinforce financial sector supervision, continue implementation of the tax and customs reform plans, strengthen debt management, as well as efforts to improve the national accounts statistics,” IMF said.

10-year-old Regina philanthropist wins international award

REGINA — The efforts of an Emerald Park boy to raise money for water infrastructure in Ethiopia has received international attention.

Five months ago, 10-year-old Connor Kindred had raised about $13,000 to sponsor charity WaterCan’s efforts to develop basic water and sanitation projects in two Ethiopian communities.

Since then, he has more than doubled that amount and his efforts have now resulted in about $31,000 going toward the projects.

That includes a $10,000 donation to WaterCan from The Supreme Master Chang Hai International Association, which chose Connor to receive its Shining World Compassion Award, his mother explained, noting the award will be presented during an event at Connor’s school next week.

“He’s really very much exceeded everybody’s expectations in terms of the fundraising,” said Patti Kindred, who thanked the many people who have donated and helped her son raise money.

Connor became interested in helping Ethiopia because his parents are adopting a child, Daniel, from that East African country. His parents Tom and Patti travelled to Ethiopia earlier this year and are expecting to return in the near future to bring Daniel, who is two years old, home to Canada.
