10-year-old Regina philanthropist wins international award

REGINA — The efforts of an Emerald Park boy to raise money for water infrastructure in Ethiopia has received international attention.

Five months ago, 10-year-old Connor Kindred had raised about $13,000 to sponsor charity WaterCan’s efforts to develop basic water and sanitation projects in two Ethiopian communities.

Since then, he has more than doubled that amount and his efforts have now resulted in about $31,000 going toward the projects.

That includes a $10,000 donation to WaterCan from The Supreme Master Chang Hai International Association, which chose Connor to receive its Shining World Compassion Award, his mother explained, noting the award will be presented during an event at Connor’s school next week.

“He’s really very much exceeded everybody’s expectations in terms of the fundraising,” said Patti Kindred, who thanked the many people who have donated and helped her son raise money.

Connor became interested in helping Ethiopia because his parents are adopting a child, Daniel, from that East African country. His parents Tom and Patti travelled to Ethiopia earlier this year and are expecting to return in the near future to bring Daniel, who is two years old, home to Canada.
