The United States is “deeply concerned” about the 24 convicted people

The United States says it is “deeply concerned” about the Ethiopian government’s conviction of 24 people, including several journalists and opposition members, on terrorism related charges.

Journalist Eskinder Nega and opposition member Andualem Arage were among those found guilty Wednesday of charges including the encouragement of terrorism and high treason.

The men, 16 of whom were convicted in absentia, could face life in prison under Ethiopia’s harsh anti-terror legislation. But prosecutors on Wednesday suggested jail terms of five years to life when they are sentenced next month.

State Department Victoria Nuland says such convictions raise “serious questions” about the intent of Ethiopia’s anti-terror laws, which critics say are used to stifle dissent.

Rights group Amnesty International also condemned the conviction, saying the men were found guilty on “trumped up” charges.” The group says freedom of expression is being “systematically destroyed by a government targeting any dissenting voice.”

The defendants were accused of having ties to an outlawed political party called Ginbot Seven, which the government has labelled a terrorist group. Some were also accused of trying to incite unrest by writing about the anti-government protests that swept North Africa last year.

Ethiopia’s government denies using anti-terror laws passed in 2009 to clamp down on opposition figures and journalists, saying their arrests have nothing to do with their reporting or political affiliations.

Rights groups say more than 150 opposition politicians and supporters have been detained since last year on terrorism-related charges.

Surveillance camera footage: The Assault of Ethiopian parking lot Attendant

On April 4, 2012, at 7:42pm, an unknown male accompanied by a female was captured on surveillance video entering the EZ Park parking lot located at 1309 Locust Street. This male approaches the lot attendant and becomes involved in a conversation. The suspect then strikes the Ethiopian attendant, Asrat Mulugeta on the side of his head with a brick and losses consciousness. The suspect then fled the lot in an unknown direction followed by two females.

Suspect Description:
Black male, 30 years-of-age, black jacket, blue jeans , shoulder length dreadlocks accompanied by two females.
Persons of Interest:

#2 Female wearing olive green colored pants and a dark jacket

Saudi seeks 45,000 new Ethiopian maids per month

Saudi Arabia plans to import 45,000 Ethiopian nationals into the kingdom every month in order to meet its requirement for domestic workers.
Maids from the African nation have been in high demand since the Gulf’s most populous nation placed a ban on recruiting workers from the Philippines and Indonesia after those countries imposed stricter employment conditions, the Saudi Gazette reported.
Noor Adeen Masfa, Vice Consul for Economic Affairs in Jeddah, said his department had met with committees from the Ethiopian Ministry of Labour in a bid to facilitate the transfer of Ethiopian workers to the kingdom.
However, the lack of sufficient flights between Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and Saudi hubs has caused delays.
The conservative Kingdom has been forced to find alternative locations from which to source domestic workers in recent months.
Last year, Saudi Arabia stopped issuing visas for domestic workers from the Philippines and Indonesia after those governments attempted to impose stricter conditions on Saudi employers, such as higher minimum pay and better working conditions.
Saudi’s Ministry of Labour this week dismissed those demands as “illogical”.
There are approximately 1.2m Filipinos working in the kingdom alone, with 180,000 of these being domestic helpers.

ቦርዱ ለዚህ የሰጠው ምክንያት ደግሞ ገንዘቡን ፓርቲዎቹ ለ2002 ዓ.ም ምርጫ ባቀረቧቸው ዕጩዎች ብዛት መሰረት ሲያከፋፍል፣ ከኢሕአዴግ ቀጥሎ ከፍተኛ ዕጩዎችን ለ2002 ዓ.ም ምርጫ አቅርቦ ውጤቱን ለተቀማው የስድስት ፖለቲካ ፓርቲዎች ድርጅት ስብስብ ለሆነው መድረክ ግን ምንም ገንዘብ አለመስጠቱን ተናግረዋል፡፡
የአትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ ምርጫ ቦርድ በመድረክ የባንክ ሂሳብ ቁጥር ስላስገባው 3598 ብር እና ለፖለቲካ ፓርቲዎች የዕለት ተግባር ማከናወኛ ከመንግሥት ካስፈቀደው 10 ሚሊዮን ብር ላይ በአንድ መቀመጫ አስልቶ ስላስገባለት ገንዘብ በሚመለከት ለኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ ምርጫ ቦርድ በጻፈው ደብዳቤ፤ “አምና ለተመሳሳይ ተግባሮች ማከናወኛ ተብሎ ያለ ፍላጐታችን በባንክ ሂሳብ ቁጥራችን ገቢ ያደረጋችሁትን 3698.41 ብር፣ ክፍፍሉ ኢፍትሃዊና አድሎአዊ ሆኖ በማግኘታችን በመልሶ መለኪያ ተጨማሪ ወጪ አውጥተን ለቦርዱ ተመላሽ ማድረጋችን እየታወቀ፣ ለ2004 ዓ.ም በጀት ዓመትም ያችው ብር 3598.41 ያለ ፍላጐታችን በባንክ ሂሳባችን ገቢ መደረጉና ይህንንም ገንዘብ ገቢ ከተደረገልን የድጋፍ ገንዘብ፣ ከሦስት እጥፍ በላይ ወጪ አውጥተን፣ የውጭ ኦዲተር ቀጥረን፣ በኦዲተር የተረጋገጠ የፋይናንስ ሂሳብ ሪፖርት እንድናቀርብ መጠየቃችን ተገቢ አይደለም” በማለት ተቃውሞውን አሰምቷል፡፡
ፓርቲው ያለፍላጐቱ በባንክ የሂሳብ ቁጥሩ የገባውን ገንዘብ አምና እንዳደረገው ሁሉ ለቦርዱ ተመላሽ ማድረጉን በደብዳቤ ጠቅሶ፤ ለወደፊትም ቢሆን የድጋፍ ገንዘቡ ክፍፍል አፈፃፀም ከአድሎአዊነት እስካልፀዳ ድረስ፣ ቦርዱ በመድረኩ የባንክ ሂሳብ ቁጥር ገቢ ማድረጉን እንዲያቆም በደብዳቤ ጠይቀውታል፡፡ ከዚህ በኋላ ግን ቦርዱ ያለ መድረክ ፍላጐት፣ በባንክ ሂሳብ ቁጥር፣ ገንዘቡን ገቢ ቢያደርግ፤ መድረክ ገንዘቡን ለመመለስ ወይም ደግሞ ገቢ ከተደረገው ገንዘብ እጥፍ በላይ ወጪ አውጥቶ እና ኦዲተር ሾሞ፣ የፋይናንስ አጠቃቀምን ሪፖርት ለማቅረብ የማይገደድ መሆኑን ለቦርዱ በደብዳቤ አስታውቋል፡
1 ሚሊዮን ብሩ ተከፋፍሎ የተሰጣቸው የጋራ ምክር ቤት አባላቱ የኢትዮጵያ ራዕይ ፓርቲ (ኢራፓ)፣ የኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄ (መኢብን)፣ የኢትዮጵያ ፍትህና ዲሞክራሲያዊ ኃይሎች ግንባር (ኢፍዴኃግ)፣ የኢትዮጵያ ዲሞክራሲያዊ ፓርቲ (ኤዴፓ) እና የኢትዮጵያ ሰላምና ዴሞክራሲያዊ ፓርቲ (ኢሰዴፓ) አምና በወጣው መስፈርት መሠረት ለሁሉም ፓርቲዎች እኩል የሚከፋፈል 20 በመቶ፣ በ2002 ዓ.ም ምርጫ ወቅት ባቀረቡት ዕጩ ብዛት 60 በመቶና በዚሁ ምርጫ ወቅት ባቀረቡት የሴት ዕጩ 20 በመቶ ድርሻ እንዲከፋፈል በመደረጉ፣ ፓርቲዎች ተቃውመው እንደነበር ይታወሳል፡፡ ስለ ጉዳዩ አስተያየታቸውን የሰጡት አቶ ገብሩ፤ “ገንዘብ መስጠቱ የሚያመጣው ለውጥ የለም፡፡ ኢሕአዴግ ለእነዚህ ፓርቲዎች ገንዘብ እየሸለማቸው እና ወዳጅ እየገዛበት ነው፡፡ ይህ ደግሞ ሙስና ነው፡፡” ብለዋል፡፡

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangoteis no longer the richest black person in the world. He’s been ousted by Ethiopian-born Saudi billionaire Sheikh Mohammed Al-Amoudi who is worth an estimated $12.5 billion. That’s $1.3 billion richer than Dangote. American TV mogul Oprah Winfrey remains the only black female billionaire in the world.
Of the 1,226 people who made it to the 2012 FORBES list of the world billionaires, only 6 are black.

Born to a Saudi father and Ethiopian mother, Mohammed Al-Amoudi immigrated to Saudi Arabia as a child where he made a fortune handling lucrative construction contracts for the Saudi Royal family. His most prominent assets include oil companies Svenska Petroleum Exploration, which produces crude oil in Africa, and refinery operator Preem. Al-Amoudi stays committed to the country of his birth: Ethiopia. In February, he announced a $3.4 billion investment in Ethiopia via his newly formed Derba conglomerate. Yemen’s Saleh is in Ethiopia, foreign ministry says

Ethiopia’s foreign ministry spokesman says the outgoing president of Yemen is in the east African country.

Dina Mufti said Friday that Ali Abdullah Saleh arrived in Ethiopia Thursday night. Mufti said he “doubts” Saleh will fly on to Yemen.

Yemen on Tuesday voted to replace Saleh with Vice President Abed Rabo Mansour Hadi, who is expected to be sworn in Saturday. He takes over after months of uncertainty over whether Saleh would step down in the face of popular protests that plunged Yemen into crisis.

Before arriving in Ethiopia, Saleh spent more than three weeks in the U.S. for medical treatment from wounds sustained in a June assassination attempt. The 69-year-old Saleh, Yemen’s ruler for 33 years, has pledged to attend his successor’s inauguration.
